IPL 2023, the sixteenth season of the Indian Premier League, was a thrilling tournament that showcased high-octane cricket and captivating rivalries. Held from March 31st to May 29th, 2023, ten teams battled it out for the coveted trophy. The Gujarat Titans, led by Hardik Pandya, entered as the defending champions, having won the title in their debut season the previous year. The tournament featured a double round-robin format, where each team played the other twice, once at home and once away, leading to a total of 70 league matches.
The league stage saw intense competition, with teams vying for a spot in the playoffs. The Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and Mumbai Indians emerged as the top four teams, securing their places in the playoffs. The playoffs consisted of the Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final. In Qualifier 1, the Gujarat Titans faced the Chennai Super Kings, with CSK emerging victorious and directly qualifying for the final. The Mumbai Indians defeated the Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator, earning a chance to compete in Qualifier 2. In Qualifier 2, the Gujarat Titans defeated the Mumbai Indians to set up a final clash against the Chennai Super Kings.
The final match between the Chennai Super Kings and the Gujarat Titans was a nail-biting encounter, ultimately won by the Chennai Super Kings in a rain-affected match that went down to the last ball. Ravindra Jadeja struck a boundary off the final ball, securing CSK's fifth IPL title, equalling the record held by the Mumbai Indians. Shubman Gill of the Gujarat Titans was the highest run-scorer of the tournament, winning the Orange Cap, while Mohammed Shami, also of the Gujarat Titans, was the highest wicket-taker, claiming the Purple Cap. The tournament was marked by several outstanding individual performances and memorable moments, further solidifying the IPL's position as one of the world's premier T20 cricket leagues.
