Introduction

Radio Serbia, also known as Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), is a Serbian public broadcasting service headquartered in Belgrade. It is the oldest and largest broadcasting organization in Serbia, and one of the oldest in Europe.

History

Radio Serbia was founded on January 1, 1929, as Radio Belgrade. It began broadcasting on a medium-wave frequency of 500 kHz, and its first director was Branko Lazarević. In 1935, Radio Belgrade became a member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

During World War II, Radio Belgrade was occupied by German forces and used for propaganda purposes. After the war, it was rebuilt and renamed Radio Yugoslavia. In 1958, it began broadcasting on shortwave, and in 1961, it launched its first television channel.

In 1992, Radio Yugoslavia was dissolved, and Radio Serbia was established as the public broadcasting service of the newly independent Republic of Serbia.
