The development team speaks out: Why is the LAU remake of "Tomb Raider" nowhere to be achieved?

Oct 04 2025

The previous rumors that Tomb Raider: Anniversary Edition will join the PS Plus premium membership service "later this year", have now been officially confirmed by Sony. Unfortunately, this news may imply that there will be no remake in the series in the near future.

Seth Mackenzie, a well-known blogger in the YouTube field of Tomb Raider, recently released a video to explore in-depth whether it is necessary to release a remake of the trilogy "Legend", "Anniversary" and "Underworld" (i.e. "Tomb Raider 7", which is also a remake of Tomb Raider 1, and "Tomb Raider 8" belongs to the LAU series).

In the comment section of the video, Timur Gagiev, whose pseudonym is XProger, left a message saying: "The remake team is very creative and has been ready to start the remake of the LAU trilogy, but unfortunately, we have not received any official invitations so far."

XProger is not only a loyal fan of Tomb Raider, but also the core developer behind the open source engine OpenLara, which can highly restore the experience of the original PS1 game on PC.

In 2024, he revealed on social platform X that he had been recruited by Saber Interactive, joined a small development team, and led the development of the Tomb Raider 1-3 Remake project. However, judging from feedback from XProger and its development team, they will not be involved in the development of the LAU remake.

The remake of the Tomb Raider LAU trilogy still has the possibility of being completed by other teams under the supervision of Crystal Power, but for now, all we can determine is the only content ported through the PS2 version provided by PS Plus.

Although it is a pleasure to be able to play Tomb Raider and Anniversary through PS Plus, it is mixed that the relatively poor PS2 version provided. You should know that the PS3 version of the LAU trilogy performed much better in all aspects, but what we ended up with was the PS2 ported version, which is really a pity.
