The reason for the former Sony president's resignation: I don't want anyone to know that Xingming's special attack was done by him!
Former PlayStation president Shawn Layden, who has worked at Sony for more than 30 years, recently revealed on a podcast that the main reason for his resignation in 2019 is because he feels powerless about the company's shift to a "service-based gaming" strategy.
This executive who once promoted the development of classic single-player games such as "The Last of Us" admitted that his expertise is to create stand-alone works with rich plots, and as Sony shifted his focus to online service games and subscription-based businesses, he realized that his philosophy no longer fits the company's future development direction.
Layden said: "When I saw the company's strategic change, I began to look back on my career at Sony and thought this was the right time to leave." It is worth noting that Sony's service-based game transformation did not seem to be smooth. The company originally planned to launch 12 service-oriented games by March 2026, but 6 under-development projects were cancelled in 2023.
The "Star Ming Special Attack" launched in 2024 was closed in less than two weeks, while "Jidi 2" set a sales record, in sharp contrast. In January this year, there was another news that the two games were cancelled, and only "Fairgame$" and "Marathon" remained, but the release date has not been determined.
