Musk says xAI will launch "excellent AI-generated games" by the end of 2026

Oct 09 2025

Elon Musk said that his xAI company will launch an "excellent" AI-generated game by the end of 2026. The announcement sparked polarizing reactions among Twitter users, with many mocking and criticizing the concept of games generated by artificial intelligence models.

Since the 2020s, the application of generative AI in the field of video game development has continued to grow, keeping pace with technological advancements in the field and echoing application trends in other industries. In November 2024, Musk announced plans for his company xAI to establish an AI game studio with the aim of "bringing games back to their glory."

Nearly a year later, the billionaire recently announced on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that xAI "will release an outstanding AI-generated game before the end of 2026." The pledge comes with a video of a modern military shooter created using xAI multimedia generation tool Grok Imagine. This video, released by DogeDesigner, a well-known opinion leader in the Dogecoin community, was ridiculed by netizens as "lack of soul" due to its mediocre picture quality, and its softened gunshot effect also caused controversy.

Reaction to Musk's statement on social media was mainly negative. The high-profile replies were critical of the concept, with many users questioning the playability of the AI-generated game. Although Musk's statement hinted that this will be a game created entirely by generative AI, he did not disclose specific details. This resistance is in line with overall industry trends, with consumers historically being critical of any form of AI use in game development.

Given the current state of technological development, Musk’s promise to launch a “superior” AI-generated game by 2026 is ambitious at best and unrealistic at worst. Although xAI is not the only company exploring games entirely generated by AI, no company has yet launched a playable version that is recognized by the public.
