Switch 2 US pre-order stranded. Trump's tariff policy has a profound impact?
Nintendo announced that it will not start the pre-order of Switch 2 in the United States for a comprehensive assessment of market conditions.
This week, after the Nintendo face-to-face meeting ended, the booking channels for the new consoles in Europe and the UK have officially opened. However, Nintendo said that given the current instability of the financial situation in the United States, pre-orders will not be opened to US customers for the time being.
In a statement to GameSpot, Nintendo clearly pointed out: "To evaluate the possible impact of tariffs and changing market conditions, pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the United States will not be launched on April 9, 2025. Nintendo will release updates in the future. However, the release date on June 5, 2025 remains unchanged."
Recently, US President Trump announced that he would impose reciprocal tariffs on many countries around the world, including high tariffs on China, after all, China is the main producer of technology products. On Wednesday, he announced an additional 10% tariff on all imported products, including 54% and 24% tariffs on China and Japan, respectively.
A report from the Financial Times last month mentioned that Nintendo has begun to transfer production from China since the first Trump administration revealed its intention to subvert global trade. The report also pointed out that more than half of the hardware Nintendo imported to the United States comes from Vietnam and Cambodia.
However, Trump announced on Wednesday that he would impose a 46% tariff on Vietnam and a 49% tariff on Cambodia, and the policy will take effect on April 9. According to sources from the Financial Times, hundreds of thousands of Switch 2 have been shipped from Vietnam to Nintendo's U.S. factory since the beginning of this year, perhaps in order to deal with the tariffs in advance.
