"Demon Slayer: Infinite City" box office may exceed Chihiro and Chihiro: Just one step away
"Demon Slayer: Infinite City" has achieved amazing box office results in Japan and is steadily among the forefront of film history. In the eighth week of release, the film received another box office of about US$5.6 million (approximately RMB 40.2 million), with a cumulative local box office of 31.43 billion yen (approximately US$213 million/RMB 1.53 billion), and the number of viewers exceeded 22 million. With this performance, this film is about to surpass "Spirited Away" and become the second-place box office runner-up in Japanese film history.
According to box office agencies, "Infinite City" will surpass the record of 31.68 billion yen (including re-released, approximately US$215 million/RMB1.55 billion) that "Spirited Demon Slayer" has maintained since 2001 this week, becoming the second highest-grossing movie in Japan, second only to "Demon Slayer: Infinite Train" released in 2020 (40.75 billion yen/RMB1.99 billion). In addition, the film exceeded the 30 billion yen mark in just 52 days, becoming the fastest film in Japanese film history.
In terms of the number of moviegoers, "Infinite City" has also approached a historical high. The current record of more than 22 million is only one step away from the record of "Spirited Away" of 24.3 million. If the current trend is maintained, the film is expected to quickly rank among the top three Japanese moviegoers.
The film's strong performance is not limited to Japan. It has already taken the lead in the Taiwan and South Korea markets, and India's pre-sale box office also exceeded 1 billion rupees (about 86 million yuan) before its release, indicating a possible regional record. With its release in the United States, Latin America and Europe this week, its global box office is expected to rise further. Analysts believe that the film's total global revenue may reach US$500 million (about RMB 3.6 billion).
