Black Ops 7 still supports PS4: Player base becomes a key factor
As early as Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has not been officially announced, rumors that the Call of Duty series will continue to provide support on PS4 and Xbox One platforms until 2026 have spread among the player community. At the beginning of this year, the first trailer released by the game confirmed the news.
As soon as this news came out, fans questioned Treyarch, not understanding why the series was limited by the performance of old hardware 12 years ago. You should know that its biggest competitor, Battlefield 6, is specially developed for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC platforms. But now, Treyarch has finally given the reason for continuing to support the old platform.
Although 12 years have passed since the release of PS4 and it is still receiving system updates, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have entered the middle and late stages of their life cycle. In this case, few people feel that the old console can continue to be supported by new games. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is just one of many new games that are still compatible with the old platform.
Treyarch revealed in an interview with CharlieIntel: "There are still an astonishing number of players using these old platforms." At the same time, they also frankly stated: "We can ensure the integrity of the core game experience, but in terms of visual performance, it is indeed impossible to reach the level of the new platform."
At present, how many players are still playing Call of Duty using old consoles, this specific number has not been made public. But obviously, this number is enough for Treyarch and other Activision studios to continue to support old platforms.
This is not the only case: "Resident Evil: Respondence" which is currently scheduled to be launched on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Switch platforms on February 27, 2026, is also rumored to be launched on PS4 version; and NetEase's "Marvel Contest" has also been launched on PS4 platform.
Although "Black Ops 7" still maintains support for the old platform, many players are still looking forward to hearing news about the Switch2 version. During Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, it announced a ten-year cooperation agreement with Nintendo, promising to introduce the new Call of Duty work to the Switch platform. However, two years have passed and this promise has not been fulfilled to this day.
