Important layout in the field of AI! SoftBank announces $6.5 billion in all-cash acquisition of Ampere
According to reports, SoftBank Group announced that it will acquire independent chip design company Ampere Computing for an all-cash transaction of US$6.5 billion. After the transaction is completed, Ampere will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of SoftBank and retain its original name.
Ampere Computing was founded in 2018 and focuses on manufacturing high-performance processors based on Arm architecture for data center equipment. Its early investors included private equity giant Carlyle Investment Group and tech giant Oracle. In this transaction, Carlyle and Oracle will sell their respective shares of Ampere.
This acquisition is an important layout of SoftBank in the field of artificial intelligence. With the rapid development of AI technology, the market demand for high-performance chips has surged. Ampere Computing's technical accumulation and market share in the field of data center processors will help SoftBank occupy an advantageous position in the competition for AI chips.
According to the terms of the agreement, the acquisition still needs to meet relevant transaction conditions, including approval by the regulatory authorities, and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025.
