Traversone Più is a trick-taking card game of Italian origin, specifically a variation of the classic Traversone, which itself is related to Spades. The "Più" in the name suggests an added layer of complexity or scoring opportunity compared to the base game. The core objective in Traversone Più, like in Traversone, is to avoid taking tricks. Unlike many trick-taking games where winning tricks is desirable, in Traversone Più, you actively try to lose every single trick, as taking tricks incurs penalties. The player with the lowest score at the end of a predetermined number of rounds wins the game.
A standard Italian 40-card deck is used, and typically the game is played with four players in partnerships or as individuals. The cards rank in the traditional order: 3 (highest), 2, Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 7, 6, 5, 4 (lowest). The deal rotates clockwise after each hand. After the cards are dealt, there is usually a bidding phase, but in Traversone Più, the bidding can be more nuanced than in the standard Traversone. Players might bid on the number of tricks they intend to take (or avoid taking), and this bid affects the scoring for that round. The specific bidding conventions and scoring system for "Più" variations can vary regionally, but generally, successful bids result in bonus points, while failing to meet the bid results in a higher penalty.
Gameplay proceeds with the lead player playing a card, and the subsequent players must follow suit if possible. If a player cannot follow suit, they can play any card. The highest card of the led suit wins the trick, unless a trump suit is designated. Traversone, and likely Traversone Più, does not have a trump suit declared traditionally. The winner of the trick leads to the next trick. The game continues until all cards have been played. The scoring is then calculated based on the number of tricks each player took and any bids that were made. The player with the lowest accumulated score after the agreed-upon number of hands is declared the winner. The "Più" aspect likely involves more complex scoring options, potentially related to specific card combinations taken in tricks or successful/unsuccessful bids to take or avoid a specific number of tricks.
