LoonIntroduction
Loon is a strategic trick-taking card game for 3 or 4 players, played with a standard 52-card deck. The game's objective is to be the first player or team to reach a predetermined score, typically 100 points.
Gameplay
Setup:
* The deck is shuffled and dealt evenly to all players.
* In a 3-player game, one player receives 17 cards, while the other two receive 18 cards each.
* In a 4-player game, each player receives 13 cards.
Bidding:
* Starting with the player to the left of the dealer, each player bids on the number of tricks they believe they can take.
* The minimum bid is 1, and the maximum bid is the number of cards in the player's hand.
* Players can bid "nil," indicating they believe they will not take any tricks.
Playing:
* The player who bid the highest number of tricks leads the first trick with any card.
* The other players must follow suit if possible. If they cannot, they may play any card.
* The highest card of the suit led wins the trick. If a trump card is played, it wins regardless of suit.
* The player who wins the trick leads the next trick.
Trump Suit:
* At the start of each hand, the dealer turns the top card of the remaining deck face up.
* The suit of this card becomes the trump suit for that hand.
* Trump cards are always higher than non-trump cards of the same rank.
Scoring:
* If a player or team takes the number of tricks they bid, they receive 10 points for each trick taken.
* If a player or team takes more tricks than they bid, they receive 1 point for each additional trick.
* If a player or team takes fewer tricks than they bid, they lose 10 points for each trick they failed to take.
* A player or team that bids "nil" and successfully takes no tricks receives 100 points.
* A player or team that bids "nil" and takes any tricks loses 100 points.
Winning:
* The game continues until one player or team reaches the predetermined score.
* The player or team with the highest score at the end of the game wins.
Strategy
* Bidding: Players should consider the strength of their hand and the likelihood of taking the number of tricks they bid.
* Leading: Players should lead with strong cards in suits where they have a lot of cards or with trump cards.
* Following Suit: Players should try to follow suit if possible, as this increases their chances of winning the trick.
* Trumping: Players should use trump cards wisely, as they can be used to win tricks that would otherwise be lost.
* Nil Bidding: Nil bidding can be a high-risk, high-reward strategy. Players should only bid "nil" if they are confident they can avoid taking any tricks.
