A major change! Sony's PS strategic focus has shifted from PS5 sales to monthly active users

  In the quarterly earnings call, Sony CEO Yushu Shishi talked with CFO Tao Lin about the current status of PlayStation's business and future strategic goals.

  Yoshiro Yuki mentioned in his live speech that the PlayStation business is currently "excellent in its performance." PS5's expansion in the number of active users and single-user consumption is "predictably continuing and driving stable profits."

  At the same time, Yuki Toshiba mentioned Sony's response to US tariff policies, explaining that PlayStation has prepared through diversified PS5 hardware production bases and stockpiling of inventory in the United States.

  As the number of PS5 installed capacity continues to grow, in addition to the influx of new users, the transition from PS4 to PS5 will continue. Tao Lin is sure that even if PS5 sales may slow down, monthly active users will continue to grow.

  She also said that Sony is expected to ship 15 million PS5s in the current fiscal year (April 2025 to March 2026), which will bring the lifetime sales of consoles to 92.7 million units as of March 31, 2026.

However, she pointed out carefully that the forecast is not a foregone conclusion, because there are many uncertainties in the market environment (including the impact of tariff policies).

  Therefore, the company no longer regards hardware sales as its core indicator, but focuses on the overall market and adopts flexible shipment strategies. In response to further questions, Tao Lin mentioned that the strategic focus has shifted from PS5 sales to monthly active users, calling this a "major policy change."

Talking about the first-party game lineup this fiscal year, Tao Lin said that Sony expects "Soul of Sheep Hoof Mountain" and "Death Stranding 2" to win the favor of players with their sequel attributes. As there are risks in the Marathon's entry into the company's new territory (battle royale type), Sony has reasonable expectations for it in its forecast.
