Google launches a voluntary resignation and buyout plan for employees, and employees' uneasiness spreads

Jun 12 2025

Today, Google launched a voluntary resignation buyout plan for employees "company-wide" of employees. The plan involves the knowledge and information department, the core engineering department, and the marketing, research and public relations teams. Among them, the knowledge and information department has a wide range of business, covering core business segments such as Google search, advertising and commerce.

At present, Google has not announced the specific number of employees involved in this round of buyout plan.

It is worth mentioning that this is not the first time that Google has reduced its employee size through such initiatives. As early as 2023, Google had laid off 12,000 employees. The launch of the voluntary resignation buyout plan is Google's latest move to continue personnel adjustments.

At the end of January this year, news came out that Google sent a memo to all employees working in Android, Pixel hardware and other projects in the United States. The memorandum mentioned a "voluntary resignation plan" that promises that any employee willing to leave his current position will receive severance payment. Normally, if the number of employees who voluntarily leave does not meet Google's expectations, a voluntary buyout is often a prelude to layoffs.

Back with the layoffs and severance payments, the uneasiness of Google employees is gradually increasing. Some Google employees initiated a petition asking the company to provide employees with a voluntary resignation buyout plan before implementing any involuntary layoffs. They believe that despite Google's financial performance, the company's continuous layoffs have caused colleagues to worry about their future career development.
