Many transformations! "Jedi Soldier 2" CEO admitted that the project has transformed into a free model

Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Shams Giojani recently revealed that "Jedi 2" was once planned as a free game during its development. The studio head also pointed out that such multiple strategic transformations may be the root cause of the accumulation of gaming technology debt and frequent performance problems.

In some aspects, the operating model of "Jidi 2" does have similarities with mainstream free games: Arrowhead maintains player activity by regularly updating free content, and provides a micro-transaction currency "super points" that can purchase in-game props. It is worth affirming that players can obtain the paid currency through play, and there is no forced consumption pressure. The contrast between this design idea and typical free games is thought-provoking.

According to GamesRadar+, Giojani said in analyzing performance issues on the game Discord channel: "The Jedi Soldier 2 was originally an AA project, and then expanded its scale, first transformed into a PS5 first production, and then adjusted to a free model, and finally returned to the buyout system (the order may be incorrect)." He admitted: "Due to the repeated changes in the target... the foundation of this tower was originally designed for a beachfront bungalow. All these factors accumulated into technical debt, causing the current performance to be unsatisfactory."

It's hard to imagine what the appearance of "Jedi 2" would be if he had insisted on the free mode. But considering the game hit a stunning sales in 2024 and achieved far exceeding expectations, Arrowhead obviously won’t regret the final choice.
