Nexon CEO: The Korean game industry must create a "masterpiece"!
At the Nexon Developer Conference 2025 (NDC 2025), which opened on June 24, Park Yong-hyun, head of the Nexon game department, delivered a speech on the theme of "Why do we want to make 'master works'" and explained the future development direction of the Korean game industry.
Park Yong-hyun pointed out that in recent years, the Korean game industry is actively getting rid of the existing online and mobile games as the center, and turning to the global market based on console games. Nexon is also constantly trying to conquer the global market through many games such as "First Berserker: Kazan" and "Rocky Heroes".
But in a rapidly changing market, a "masterpiece" must be created. In today's era, although the development costs of console games and consumer expectations are increasing, and the ontology game market in various countries has been saturated, everyone is looking for a way out. For example, many game companies in China are developing games for the global market.
As for "masterpiece", Park Yong-hyun explained that this is not a simple "hot game", but refers to games that can be on par with other world-renowned games and compete on the same stage: such as "Black Myth: Goku" or "Save Heaven 2". Park Yong-hyun believes that compared with Western developers, South Korea has rich experience in game services. Korean culture has set off a global craze in recent years, and it is necessary to use this trend to create games that can compete with global giants.
In addition, the game's marketing strategy and game quality need to be adjusted. Park Yong-hyun mentioned that when facing the global market, the trailer is particularly important. The country that does the best in this regard is China. Like "Genshin Impact" and "Black Myth: Goku" created a huge response through trailers before it was released. As for game quality, we need to constantly try out the development methods of successful games and "find the best method for ourselves."
Park Yong-hyun said at the end of his speech: "The door of opportunity is still open, and we must seize the opportunity before it is closed. Trial and error is important, but it is also important to let more people share their experiences and explain their respective challenges. Therefore, we will hold offline NDC again so that everyone can share their cases. I hope NDC 25 can become an opportunity for us to explore challenges solutions together."
