Hideo Kojima doesn’t want to hand over the baton when doing games! At Korami, I failed to try to let go

Well-known game producer Hideo Kojima recently accepted an exclusive interview with the British GQ magazine. He is nearly 62 years old and is handsome with fashionable makeup and handsomeness, and generously shares his creative history. When asked if he was going to hand over the signature title "Hideo Kojima", he admitted that he didn't need to and was unwilling to let go. "Maybe the day I disappeared, Kojima Studio will disappear with it."

Hideo Kojima's representative works include "Metal Equipment" and "Death Stranding" series, and the latest work "Death Stranding 2: Above the Beach" will be released on June 26. Despite his busy work during the publicity period, he was still active on social media and was also energetic when interviewed. But he suffered from serious illness during the epidemic and once made a will and handed it over to his assistant.

The island, who was nearly sixty years old, was seriously damaged at the time and could not even watch the movie. For this art lover who watches at least one movie a day and must visit museums every week, it's like the end of the world. This is also the first time he has seriously considered the finiteness of life. "I kind of understand why people commit suicide. It felt like the end of the world." This illness completely changed his understanding of creation, from "wanting to die in the cinema" to "wanting to die in the creative process."

Although standing at the forefront of the game and film and television industry, Xiaodao has no intention of giving up his creative dominance. "I'm here." He admitted that his experience of trying to let go in the Korami era ended in failure. "I won't name which games it is. The sequel is okay, but a brand new game? Even if I write the script, no one can understand it."

He prefers to continue his creative spirit in the form of "fire" rather than "baton". "Whenever I share my favorite things on social media, there will be directors, actors or musicians who contact me and say 'I became a creator because of your game'." He stressed that these people did not inherit "Hideo Kojima", but each ignited the fire he got from him.

Talking about the ten years after leaving Korami, Kojima said that the independent studio was operating well, which was the most important stage of his life. "But what I fear the most is time. I am afraid of death, afraid of gains and dementia, afraid of getting old so old that I don't even know anything." Recalling the epidemic obstacles encountered during the development of "Death Stranding 2", the opening scene of Leya Sedu, which was originally scheduled to start filming in spring 2020, was forced to postpone, and the game's release has been postponed since 2023.

When asked about the changes in his outlook on life after he was sick, Kojima admitted: "To be honest, I am very anxious and feel that I don't have enough time. There are still many things I want to do and must do." After independence, he thought he could create as he pleased, but the reality was not the case. "There are always stranger ideas in my mind, but if I really do it and it doesn't sell well, the studio will be finished. I know every employee and his family, and all these responsibilities are on me."

As for the completion of "Death Stranding 2", Kojima said that there are still many things to improve, but "there is not much time left." Developing games is his favorite but also the most time-consuming creation, and you must set boundaries and move forward. "At most you can make one game a year... up to three games in ten years. How to choose? What is the right one?" Anxiety reveals in your tone. Especially after his children left home as adults, he regained his creative enthusiasm for being in his twenties, but had to face the double limitations of physical strength and time.

The full interview with the UK GQ also includes more content: Do Kojima's sons play with their father's works? Mother cheats when playing "Metal Gear 3"? And Kojima's favorite movies (the answers are constantly changing).
