CD Projekt officially announces strategic transformation: Focus on open world narrative RPG games
Polish game developer CD Projekt officially confirmed in its latest podcast that the company will fully turn to level 3A RPG development centered on open world and complex narratives, and disclosed the details of its multi-project parallel development strategy.
Chief Executive Officer Marcin Iwiński pointed out that the strategic adjustment originated from in-depth reflection on past experience: "We have tried to expand to other game types, but the results have not met expectations. To continue to deliver works that meet players' expectations, we must deepen our field of expertise - immersive role-playing games." This decision marks that CD Projekt will completely abandon the attempt to diversify and concentrate resources to strengthen its advantages in the field of narrative-driven RPG.
Co-founder Adam Badowski further explained the way the new strategy is implemented: "We have built a multi-project development model to incubate different works in a single track. This model not only maintains the focus of creation, but also achieves continuous output through team collaboration." He emphasized that all projects revolve around the core positioning of "open narrative RPG" to form a clear strategic path.
At present, the development of the sequel to the two main IPs of CD Projekt has entered the fast lane: the new work of the "Witcher" series and the sequel to the "Cyberpunk 2077" are being promoted simultaneously. In order to support multi-line operations, the company continues to expand its R&D scale: the latest financial report shows that the number of development teams has increased from 707 in February to 730, an increase of more than 3%. This figure confirms CD Projekt's commitment to reserve talents for "The Witcher 4", "Cyberpunk 2" and other undisclosed projects.
This strategic shift is seen as CD Projekt's active breakthrough in "single-type hot-product dependence". By building a product matrix of open narrative RPGs, this developer, which once ranked first with "The Witcher 3" and "Cyberpunk 2077", is trying to build a more stable competitive barrier in the field of 3A-level gaming.
