Is it wrong to be too handsome? CDPR once remade Geralt's appearance and was ridiculed by players!

According to foreign media Eurogamer, CD Projekt Red has made major adjustments to the appearance of Geralt, the protagonist of the "Witcher" series, but this change has aroused strong opposition from players.

In 2010, when "The Witcher 2" released its first batch of promotional materials, players found that Geralt's image had undergone tremendous changes compared to the first generation. In the original works, Geralt's iconic triangular face shape, sharp nose bridge and almost missing chin constituted a recognizable feature. The new version of Geralt in "The Witcher 2" adopts a facial features that are more in line with the proportion of the human body, and the overall image is more handsome. However, this change immediately attracted a lot of criticism from players.

"The facial structure of the first generation Geralt was not anatomically accurate, but under the low-poly modeling of the Aurora engine, this stylized performance was outstanding," explained Pawel Mielniczuk, artistic director of CDPR.

As the engine technology is upgraded, the development team decided to reshape the protagonist's image. "We thought this change wouldn't be noticed, but after the first screenshots were released, the player forum was immediately blown up - they thought the real Geralt should remain 'inhumanly ugly'," Mielniczuk revealed. The team eventually spent two years finding a balance between the original style and the real ratio.

At the development stage of "The Witcher 3", Mielniczuk still hopes to optimize Geralt's image, but CDPR decided to maintain the existing design: "We can't repeat the same mistakes."

Now that as the Witcher 4 enters the full development stage, Unreal 5 engine may bring new opportunities for image reshaping. But Mielniczuk made it clear: "Gealt's image has been deeply rooted in people's hearts, and we will only enhance the realism in terms of texture and detail." But he added half-jokingly that if he wanted to redesign, Henry Cavill (played by Geralt in Netflix) was undoubtedly the best choice: "His image is perfect!"
