It’s more fun to kill monsters and enemies! Nearly 60% of Steam's revenue comes from action games

Recently, the research agency GameDiscoverCo analyzed the scale of the Steam market. Through experimental methods, each game with revenue of more than one million US dollars was classified. It was found that action games became the most valuable type of Steam with a market share of 58.37%, followed by role-playing (17.11%), strategy (13.97%), simulation management (9.76%) and sports (1%).

  Segment type performance

  Action game: Arena shooting (including battle royale) contributed the largest share, accounting for 18.99% (US$9.52 billion); first-person shooting followed closely with revenue reaching US$6.67 billion.

  Role-playing category: Action RPG accounts for the largest share (26.45%, US$3.89 billion), MMORPG (3.69 billion US dollars) and CRPG (2.69 billion US dollars) ranked second and third respectively.

  Strategic category: MOBA contributed 19.23% of the market share (US$2.31 billion), real-time strategy (US$1.84 billion) and grand strategy (US$1.16 billion) performed outstandingly.

  Simulation business category: Comprehensive simulators account for nearly half (44.57%, US$3.74 billion), career simulation (US$1.36 billion) and racing games (US$943 million) form the second echelon.

  The head effect is significant

  The highest average income subtype of a single game: Arena Shooting ($634.8 million), Battle Royale ($354.2 million), Hero Shooting ($206.7 million).

  The lowest average income of a single game: visual novel ($4.2 million), deck building Roguelike ($3.4 million).

This report reveals the dominance of action games in the Steam market, especially through the strong promotion of popular games, with revenue highly concentrated on a few top works.
