"Destiny 2" Steam's first crash peak was less than 100,000, hitting a new low in the series!
Since the expansion package was launched on July 15, the number of players on the Steam platform has been sluggish, far lower than the same level of the previous expansion packs of "Fate 2". As a new chapter in the game's "Year of Prophecy", "Edge of Destiny" should have attracted a large number of players to return, but Steam's player data seems to indicate that many players have higher expectations for the game itself before experiencing the new content in depth.
This expansion marks the beginning of a new multi-year "Legend of Destiny 2", bringing players to Kepler, a new destination located on the edge of the solar system. The story revolves around the mysterious organization "The Nine", introducing a new character Lodi and Orin the Lost, who once served as the "Nine Messenger". Along with the expansion package, there is also a brand new artifact for players to upgrade and unlock skills. Although "Edge of Destiny" opens a new legend, many players who left after the expansion pack of "The Final Shape" did not return.
According to the data reported by TheGamer by Steam, "Destiny 2: The Edge of Destiny" on the day of release, the highest number of Steam's simultaneous online users was only 99,193. Even more worrying, the number further dropped to about 89,000 on July 16, making it one of the worst-performing expansion packs in Destiny 2's history. For comparison, the first-day peak of "The End of the Shape" launched in June 2024 reached 314,000 people on Steam. This means that the base of the first player in "Edge of Destiny" is only about one-third of the "End of Shape". Looking back at earlier expansions, 2022's The Witch Queen attracted more than 290,000 Steam players when it first released, while 2020's Beyond Light also achieved success, with a peak of about 240,000 on the first day.
The growing fatigue of players and the accumulated problems within Bungie's company are likely to be the main factor in the poor performance of "Edge of Destiny" on Steam. However, Destiny 2 still has time to turn things around, as the game will also launch several important updates during the Year of Prophecy. The next highly anticipated expansion, Destiny 2: Renegades, is scheduled to be released in December 2025, and is said to be inspired by Star Wars. Although "Traitor" is expected to attract some lost players to return, whether "Destiny 2" can reunite the stable player group and restore to a popularity level close to the period of "End of Face" remains to be verified.
