Night Diving Studio plans to remake the seventh-generation console game, KEX engine becomes key
Nightdive Studios, which is famous for its high-quality reproduction of classic games, recently revealed to the media that the studio has mastered the technical ability to remake the seventh-generation console (PS3/Xbox 360) games. Studio CEO Stephen Kick and Business Development Director Larry Kuperman said in an exclusive interview with VGC that they are planning to expand their business into a library of almost forgotten games.
"We are fully prepared." Cooperman said of games that are at risk of loss due to console exclusiveness. He explained that the project evaluation will mainly focus on several key questions: "Have the target game ever launched a PC version? Is the source code complete? What is the quality of the material? These factors will affect the final decision. But it is undeniable that many excellent works that should not be buried have emerged in that era."
Kick emphasized the importance of working with the original development team. Taking the PS3 exclusive shooting game "Mist" as an example, he imagined asking the original development team "what improvements will be made if it is remade." This cooperation model has been verified during the development of "Cyber Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remake": "When we invite the original developers to participate, they can always give constructive opinions. Moreover, after porting the game to modern hardware, technical problems such as frame rate and map resolution are usually solved."
In response to the challenges brought by the unique Cell processor architecture of PS3, Kirk admitted: "This is definitely a tough bone to crack. The developers complained about the complexity of this system backwards, and even Sony later gave up the solution to make PS3 backward compatible with PS2 because of the high cost." However, he also said that with the technical experience accumulated by the studio over the years, "we are confident that we can complete this task well."
Cooperman pointed out that the studio's independently developed KEX engine will become the key to solving the problem: "Having an independent engine allows us to gain more initiative in technology. If we start a remake of PS3 games, our technical director Sam will definitely be able to tap into the new potential of the KEX engine." It is worth mentioning that Night Diving Studio's latest work "Monster: Remake" has become the fastest-selling game in the studio's history, which may also indicate that the field of classic game remakes has broad development prospects.
