The performance evaluation of "Strange Hunter" PS5 Pro is significantly better than the basic version
The highly anticipated game "Monster Hunter Wilds" is about to be launched. According to a well-known European game media eurogamer, a professional evaluation team Digital Foundry (also known as Shumao Club) recently conducted an in-depth analysis of the performance of "Monster Hunter: Wilds" on the PS5 Pro platform. Shumao Club believes that although the visual effects of the game are quite amazing, the performance of its console version is not perfect, and the PS5 Pro version is the best among the console version.
Shumao Club specifically pointed out that the 60-frame mode provided by PS5 Pro is particularly eye-catching, because the performance of this game on the standard version of PS5 is really worrying. The basic version of PS5 has obvious shortcomings in anti-aliasing, resulting in severe picture serrations and frequent image tearing, and barely adapted to 4K display through rough spatial upscaling and sharpening technologies. The rendering resolution inside the game fluctuates between 720p and 1080p, and the lack of necessary temporal upsampling technology, greatly reducing the appearance of low-resolution rendering on high-resolution screens.
In contrast, the PS5 Pro version of "Monster Hunter: The Wilderness" has achieved a qualitative leap with the support of Sony's PSSR technology. Even in static images, jagged ladder artifacts are significantly reduced, and images in dense geometric scenes are clearer and cleaner. Although the PS5 version has a slight advantage in post-processing sharpening, the PS5 Pro version has established an overwhelming advantage at the basic image level (such as geometric stability, anti-flickering ability).
In the comparison of dynamic scenes, this gap is even more significant. The PS5 version continues to experience geometric flicker and vegetation jitter during movement, while the PS5 Pro version presents a smoother (although slightly softer) picture. Judging from the rendering specifications, the PS5 Pro version has a native resolution of 1080p and PSSR technology (no dynamic resolution adjustment observed), and its effect is similar to the DLAA anti-aliasing technology of Nvidia graphics cards. Although it is still far from the ideal 4K/60 frame experience, it has greatly improved the player's gaming experience.
In terms of frame rate stability, although the PS5 Pro version does not completely lock 60 frames, its stuttering frequency and amplitude are significantly lower than that of the PS5 version. After turning on the 120Hz+VRR function, the frame rate can reach 60-80 frames, but Shumao Club still recommends that players lock 60 frames for a more stable experience.
In frame rate mode, the PS5 Pro version still uses screen space reflection (SSR) technology, and its low resolution and easy-to-be-brow characteristics are particularly prominent in the water performance of Monster Hunter: Wilderness. The resolution mode of the PS5 Pro version introduces ray tracing reflection technology, which can present the reflection of objects outside the screen, which is undoubtedly a major technological breakthrough. However, this technology still has some flaws, such as noise in reflection in mobile scenes, low-resolution rendering and object emergence, and limited reflection accuracy caused by volumetric light not being included in the ray-tracing system. Despite this, compared with the fuzzy distortion of SSR technology, light tracing reflection is still a highlight of the PS5 Pro version.
In general, the PS5 Pro version completely surpasses the PS5 version's TAA solution in terms of anti-aliasing and anti-shortness through PSSR technology. Although slightly under-sighted in image sharpness, cleaner vegetation rendering and reduced geometric flickering make it perform better overall at normal viewing distances. The resolution mode claims to reach 1728p native resolution (actually measured to 1944p), but it will experience more frequent frame rate fluctuations than the base version when moving quickly or fighting. The balance mode (targeted by 40 frames + ray tracing reflection) balances image quality and performance with a native resolution of 1404p, and its performance is similar to the balance mode of the PS5 version.
Finally, Shumao said that the improvement of "Monster Hunter: Wilderness" on the PS5 Pro is worthy of recognition, and the enhancement of image quality and function makes it significantly better than the PS5 version. However, the game itself has high hardware demand, and the support of PS5 Pro has not achieved qualitative change of 4K/60 frames or revolutionary ray tracing effects like other works. More importantly, it provides a reasonable expectation of the PS5 version - a frame rate mode of 1080p/60 frames, as well as two low frame rate modes with better picture quality and limited ray tracing. Although this kind of complementary evolution is practical, it has failed to break through the performance ceiling, which is somewhat regrettable.
